About how the water was discovered

'Desert Hot Springs' natural hot and cold mineral water aquifers were discovered in the Twentieth Century by adventurer-homesteader Cabot Yerxa who called the site of the wells "Miracle Hill."

The entrance to the city

He hand-dug two wells with a pick and shovel on his 160-acre homestead. One produced crisp cold water, the other - hot mineral water. Hence, the appellate ‘Miracle Hill’.

The aquifers that he discovered are tremendous. To this day, Desert Hot Springs’ natural hot mineral waters originate from the Desert Hot Springs Aquifer, which continues to be heated by ancient geothermal forces thousands of feet below the earth’s surface. Naturally heated to temperatures as high as 180 degrees, for centuries, the waters have been believed to hold curative powers.

When the first scientific analysis of the hot mineral water was performed in 1937, its therapeutic value was affirmed. Many call the waters “miracle water” because of its natural healing and restorative properties.
